Dinner August 16, 2008
I bought an elliptical on Friday to prepare for my dinner at the Blue House on Saturday night. I don’t mean to imply that Andrew’s food is making me fat, but the logic in my mind is that I can eat more of Andrew’s great meals if I trim down a bit!
One of these days I will run out of superlatives and will just state that the last dinner was good, and that will be it. No more raving about all the new dishes, all the courses, and uh let’s see --- the best part of the meal the desserts (thus the elliptical).
Saturday, August 16th, the dinner did not disappoint. The menu was just first class, different combinations, different dressings, different accompaniments, but same great preparation and presentation. Dinner began with the soup shooters that we have begun to expect each month. A chilled yellow tomato and roasted red tomato soup shooters with a rolled, fried sliced parmesan cheese – very good.
Salad with all the good ingredients, but the standout element was the Coffee Mole Dressing. Striking flavor, really completed the salad – everyone was talking about it (the diners all share their thoughts among the tables, it is a very friendly crowd).
The starter was a garlic spiced rub beef tenderloin with blueberry chimichurri salsa. Allow me repeat as I generally do, the beef is always tender and flavorful, always prepared perfectly. Chef Andrew used yellow corn for the grits to form the bed on which the tenderloin rested with the blueberry chimichurri salsa surrounding it, creating a visual treat. It was the jalapeno grits that stood out. The consistency was typical grits, but with a bit of a snap – I could have had a second serving.
The entrée was fresh Wahoo medallions with a tropical salsa and perfumed rice on a banana leaf. OK, here I go again… As good as Andrew is with beef, he is with fish. Grilled perfectly, just the right amount of searing on the outside and perfection inside, perfect consistency and flavor. The salsa was in keeping with the theme of the evening and very tasty. And the rice was just the right complement – I could have had seconds -- oh no, more time of the elliptical.
How is this for dessert? Grilled peaches with strawberry, raspberry tiramisu. Absolutely terrific! And if that wasn’t enough, a shot glass of white Sangria with grilled white nectarines – we all had seconds on the Sangria.
You just cannot get this anywhere in the state of Texas, maybe the entire country. Come to dinner before the word spreads too far and while you can. They have one-seating per month and each dinner is sold out. Make sure you make your reservation early or you will be disappointed.
Send me your comments about dinner and we will post those as well.
Best Wishes, Michael Burns
